I will post all of our course announcements to this page. Keep in mind that you are responsible for all of the information (and changes, etc.) on this page, so you should probably check it often.
10/26/07 - Change in Final Project due datesI just realized today (Thanks, Kim!) that I had not updated the assigned due dates on the research project. Just FYI, I have move them back to give you more time to decide on a topic and write a preliminary introduction. If I forget to talk about it in class on Tuesday, please remind me! 10/10/07 - Change in Research Presentation scheduleWe will be holding off on R4 because of a scheduling issue. So, all of the research article presentations will be moved up one slot until we can get all of the issues sorted out. Thank you for being flexible. 9/17/07 - R1R1 has been posted to the readings page. I have cut it down to about 32 pages + the tables and bibliography. Assuming that things go as planned, we will be discussing it in-class on Thursday, so you should have plenty of time to read it before then. Don't forget that you need to bring 3 questions to class for each of the research papers (rather than an article highlight). The questions can be on any aspect of the paper: the writing, the importance, the tests, etc. They can be things you don't understand or things that you don't agree with. What I am looking for is proof that you read and thought about the papers, not that you understand every detail. 9/13/07 - Changes in ScheduleI have once again changed our course schedule. I think that we will be able to catch up when we get to the efficient markets theory. Instead of spending 2 days on it, we'll condense it to just one day. Of course, I've thought that before . . . One way or anther, I think that our discussions so far have been very good. Overall, I'm impressed with your preparation for our classes and with your willingness to talk about your ideas and conclusions. 9/10/07 - Change in ScheduleI have readjusted our class schedule (again). I had hoped that we would at least start Chapter 2 last Thursday, but we didn't have time. That's okay, we're still moving forward at an acceptable pace. However, because of the change, the homework (Chapter 2 #16) will not be due until 9/13 or until we have had time to do an example in class. While I was at it, I also rescheduled the Position Paper due date and a couple of the other assignments, so you may want to take a look at our revised course schedule. 9/5/07 - Homework Problem #1 (Chapter 2 #16)The homework assignment is missing one piece of information for you to complete the homework problem for 2006. Assume that the weather is 'rainy' in both 2005 and 2006. Also, to keep things simple, just use the one (1) income statement format that we use in class (sales less amortization). Also, because of time constraints, we're not going to do anything with dividend irrelevance. Since we aren't going to talk about it, just do the homework problem shown in the book. 9/4/07 - Participation PointsAt the end of each of our class sessions, I take a few minutes to evaluate your participation. If I feel you have been actively involved in both the group and class discussions, I award 15 points. If you have been involved in one and not the other (i.e. you talk with your group but do not engage in the open class discussion), then you get 10 points. If I feel that you have not participated at all, or that your comments show you have not adequately prepared for the class, then I give only 5 points. On days with little or not interaction (such as the first day of class or a day when I spend most of the time lecturing), I give everyone the full 15 points. If you are late to class, you automatically loose 5 points from the assessment. The point of these points is to make sure that everyone is actively engaged in our activities and discussion. Although these points don't make up a huge portion of your grade, don't blow them off! If you want to see your participation grade for a particular day, please come by and talk with me. 9/4/07 - Group AssignmentsI have finished the group presentation assignments for the semester, including the OAP article presentations. Please take a look and make sure that you have been put in the correct group with the correct OAP and country assignment (for the OAP and foreign GAAP presentations). Also, please let me know if I have made any other mistake (spelling, etc.) on the presentations page. Thanks! Please keep in mind that you will each do a solo presentation of a research article during the semester. 8/29/07 - General AnnouncementsThank you for your participation during the Cooper Norman presentation yesterday. As I said in class, we are very excited to have them join the group of firms that recruit at UI, and we are also very excited to have them participate with us in offering activities and scholarships here at UI. Because we are a little behind with our history of accounting discussion, and since the presentation yesterday took the entire class period, we are going to push back the next reading assignment. So, your AHs for E8-11 will be due on August 4th instead of August 30th. Remember that you have an assignment due, technically, this Friday. However, I will accept it through 8:30 Tuesday morning (August 4th). Have a great weekend! 8/27/07 - Class tomorrowDon't forget that Cooper Normal will be coming to class tomorrow to speak with us. This should be a good opportunity to do some networking in a more relaxed setting. Since we are having visitors, you may also want to come in business casual tomorrow. Also, I have posted the PowerPoint slides for our accounting history discussion.
8/27/07 - Critical Thinking AssignmentRemember that your first writing assignment, the critical thinking assignment, is due this Friday at 5:00pm. Please don't forget to turn it in! 8/21/07 - Article Highlights!Since the current article highlight example is for a full research paper, I have had a request to provide an example for a paper more like the ones we are doing now. This example is a summary of a theory paper, so it doesn't have a hypothesis, data analysis, or results section. You'll notice that I simply removed those example from my highlight. Instead, I wrote up a general discussion of the paper and listed a couple of questions that the new paper brought up. You should use a similar process for the papers you are reading for our next class. Remember, the whole point of these article highlights is to help you summarize the articles into something that you can use to quickly review the articles we have read! 8/20/07 - Welcome!Welcome to Accounting 561! This is going to be an exciting semester, since we will be working on many aspects of accounting that are not covered in the other classes here at UI. I look forward to getting to know and work with each of you as we move through this new semester. |
